Thinking about owning a snake
The idea of owning a snake seems much more ‘exotic’ and more exciting than a rabbit or cat. How do you care for a snake?
- The truth is that snakes odnt do a great deal. Yup, you have a snake- very nice, but they just really slither around, eat mice and shed their skin. Once the glamour and excitment has worn off you might get bored with owning one, so make sure you dont want a ‘exciting’ animal.
- They can be expensive. The bigger or rarer the snake, the more it’ll cost. Normal corn snakes can go for £25 and a pythons can go from anywhere around £350. Theres the heating equipment needed for enclosures, the enclosure itself and the supply of live animals to feed it.
- Have you got the space? The bigger the snake the bigger the enclosure you’ll need for them and a boa constrictor could end up taking up half of a room -be sure you dont want a hamster which takes up no room at all. Corn snakes or grass snakes dont taken up too much room though.
- Do some researchon your chosen snake. Is it venomous? Just how long can they be when stretched out? How many times do you need to feed them? Is there a certain temperature the snake needs to be kept at? Asking the questions and getting the answers before you get one is a great start.
- Age. be aware snakes can live for 20 years, so it is a commitment in having one.
- Dont geta dangerous snake. Its only sensible isnt it? A vemous snake is a very dangerous animal to have as a pet and if a constrictor snake gets a good hold of you, it can be very hard to make them let go.
